Firebird HowTo

Just to bring it together and give it separate topic.

http://www.trackstudio.ru/database-firebird.html
http://www.trackstudio.com/connecting-firebird.html

That page is to be completely rewritten because of
  1. Outdated tool hardly anyone would use. Newbs would get lost and are better suggested to use something different. Experienced ones would override it and use their DB IDE of choice. Better course would be to explicitly name "constants", then show how to enter them in IBExpert or FlameRobin.
  2. among those ocnstants should be minmal Firebird version and (for those newbs) database ODS
  3. Using of C:\ is Windows-specific.
  4. Using of C:\ is blocked by system protection (UAC in Windows Vista and later). It better be subfolder like for HSQLDB.
  5. Even better to make server-side alias. Your are not expected to document aliases and all about their editing, but i think you're to stress their existence and suggest user to read about them and use them as "good practice"
  6. Using of *.gdb file extension is deprecating and causes trouble since Windows XP, IOW on all except most outdated Windows boxes. Should be *.FDB
  7. SQL dialect not specified. Which one would be default - fragile assumption. Should be "3".
  8. Charset (encoding) is not specified. Relying on binary "as is" copying might hamper cross-OS migration (moving tuned service to another server), can harm international using with multiple languages at same time. And modern IDE's are suggesting charset using, so applying your HOWTO with substituting IDE instead of ISQL might result in unexpectedly different setup.
  9. JDBC URL is to have charset specified. You show this for MySQL, similar to be done for Firebird. And the connection charset should match one set for DB creation.

8. I see now UTF-8 is hardcoded into URL in 4017 beta. Good.

Yet it is still c:\ and still *.gdb
I think those are both quite bad settings for Windows.
Connection to GDB on desktop Windows causes significant delays, hopefully nothing more.
